Originally adopted in military networks as a means of ensuring secure communication when confronted with the threats of jamming and interception, spread-spectrum systems are now the core of commercial applications such as mobile cellular and satellite communication.

This book provides a concise but lucid explanation and derivation of the fundamentals of spread-spectrum communication systems. The level of presentation is suitable for graduate students with a prior graduate-level course in digital communication and for practicing engineers with a solid background in the theory of digital communication. As the title indicates, the author focuses on principles rather than specific current or planned systems. Although the exposition emphasizes theoretical principles, the choice of specific topics is tempered by their practical significance and interest to both researchers and system designers. Throughout the book, learning is facilitated by many new or streamlined derivations of the classical theory. Problems at the end of each chapter are intended to assist readers in consolidating their knowledge and to provide practice in analytical techniques. Principles of Spread-Spectrum Communication Systems is largely self-contained mathematically because of the four appendices, which give detailed derivations of mathematical results used in the main text.

Referring to specific information inside an XML document is a little like finding a needle in a haystack: how do you differentiate the information you need from everything else? XPath and XPointer are two closely related languages that play a key role in XML processing by allowing developers to find these needles and manipulate embedded information. XPath describes a route for finding specific items by defining a path through the hierarchy of an XML document, abstracting only the information that’s relevant for identifying the data. XPointer extends XPath to identify more complex parts of documents. Written for XML and XSLT developers and anyone else who needs to address information in XML documents, the book assumes a working knowledge of XML and XSLT. By the time you’ve finished the book, you’ll know how to construct a full XPointer (one that uses an XPath location path to address document content) and completely understand both the XPath and XPointer features it uses.

About the Author

John E. Simpson’s forte is taking obscure bits of technical information and making them accessible. He is the author of Just XML, now in its second edition, and Just XSL (Prentice Hall), as well as XML.com’s monthly XML Q&A column. John has been working with XML, XSL, and XPath since the technologies first emerged.

The extensive changes to Visual Basic and the newness of the .NET platform call for a VB .NET reference guide oriented toward professional developers–those deeply experienced in Visual Basic and those adding VB .NET to their list of mastered languages. VB .NET Language in a Nutshell answers the call. As a reference book, it doesn’t waste space on simple concepts, but does document, using practical examples, how language elements work, alternative approaches, optimal usage, and potential pitfalls. The meat of the book is the alphabetical reference to the functions, statements, directives, objects, and object members that make up the VB .NET language. You can quickly get the whole story on a language element that interests you or seems to be behaving unexpectedly in your code. To ease your transition to .NET, each language element includes a “VB .NET/VB 6 Differences” section.Amazon.com Review
Written especially for those readers coming to VB.NET from an earlier version of Visual Basic, VB.NET in a Nutshell offers a quick language tour as well as a nicely thorough reference to all standard VB objects, methods, and properties. Even if you are a raw beginner, this concise reference is really all you need to get onboard with the new version of the world’s most popular programming language.

The first sections of this text zero in on what’s new and different in VB.NET. From the basics of the language, centering on data types and object-oriented features, this quick-start guide highlights essential language features that every VB.NET programmer needs to know. There’s also material here on the underlying .NET framework, from deployment basics (like .NET assemblies) to built-in namespaces. Coverage of delegates and event handling shows how to process events. The substantially different exception handling model of VB.NET is contrasted with the older ways of handling errors.

The heart of this title has to be its reference material (over 400 pages), primarily on the built-in core VB classes in the new .NET version. While there were rumors that VB.NET changed VB completely, this material should reassure you. By providing APIs that resemble older versions, VB programmers still can leverage common string, date, and time and other functions. Every object, method, and property is described, along with sample code, and differences with VB6. A standout here are “gotchas” when using the new APIs compared to VB6. Besides objects and APIs, there is also coverage of language keywords (for logical, looping, and branching statements), too.

The book closes with several useful reference sections, one of which details all the new features to be found in VB.NET. This is almost a must-read for anyone facing the new VB.NET for the first time. Another appendix here lists VB.NET language APIs. While it’s true that you can use many languages with .NET, VB.NET Language in a Nutshell covers the APIs that will give VB.NET its real flavor as a new programming language. Both a quick-start guide and a worthwhile reference to use everyday at your desk, this title is a great way to start using VB.NET in real projects quickly. –Richard Dragan

A clear and comprehensive guide to TCP/IP protocols

Essential reference to what’s really going on at the network level

Covers Telnet, FTP, HTTP, SMTP, ESMTP, IMAP4, POP3, NNTP, and LDAP

IP4 and IP6

In Detail

This book covers in detail the Open System Interconnection (OSI) reference model and the TCP/IP protocols that operate that different layers. Its coverage includes various application protocols. The authors explain in an easy-to-read style networking concepts and protocols, with examples that make the book a practical guide in addition to its coverage of theory.

What you will learn from this book?

This book covers all the basic as well as advanced uses of TCP/IP

Chapter 1 is a general introduction to networking concepts the understanding of which is required for reading the book. The chapter introduces the Open System Interconnection (OSI) networking framework, which defines seven layers for implementing network protocols, and the simpler TCP/IP model. It also explains the three different data transmission methods: synchronous, asynchronous, and packet.

Chapter two focuses on tools that can be used to monitor data transfers on the network. Three tools are covered: MS Network Monitor and Ethereal.

Chapter 3 discusses the first of the seven layers of the OSI model: the physical layer. Serial lines, modems, digital circuits, and other hardware devices are covered. The chapter also explains how the choice of the physical layer depends on the choice of the link protocol, with emphasis on Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, and Gigabyte.

Chapter 4 explains the link layer, focusing on the following link protocols: Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP), Compressed SLIP (CSLIP), High-level Data Link Control (HDLC), Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP), Frame Relay, and Ethernet.

Chapter 5 talks about the Internet Protocol (IP). It covers IP datagram, Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP), Address Resolution Protocol (ARP), Reverse ARP (RARP), and Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP).

Chapter 6 covers IP addresses in IP version 4. The various classes of IP addresses, reserved IP addresses, net masks, subnetworks, and super networks.

Chapter 7 covers IP routing and IP forwarding, including handling routing tables; routing protocols, such as Routing Vector Protocols (RVP) and Link State Protocols (LSP); and Neutral Exchange Point (NIX).

Chapter 8 focused on IP version 6, which enlarges the IP address size from 4 to 16 bytes and introduces some changes to the IP datagram.

Chapter 9 covers the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), the protocol that transfers data between applications on different computers.

Chapter 10 presents the simpler alternative to TCP, the User Datagram Protocol (UDP).

Chapter 11 covers the Domain Name System (DNS), which translates IP addresses into domain names and vice versa.

Chapter 12-17 covers a number of application protocols, namely Telnet, FTP, HTTP, SMTP, ESMTP, IMAP4, POP3, NNTP, and LDAP.

Appendix A covers working with CISCO routers. since CISCO is considered the dominant company in this area.

Who this book is written for?

This book is suitable for the novice and experienced system administrators, programmers, and anyone who would like to learn how to work with the TCP/IP protocol suite. It can be read even by those who have little background in networking

The iPhone is cool, and the iPhone is fun, but the iPhone also means serious business. For those of you who bought your iPhones to help get your lives organized and free yourselves from the ball and chain of desktop computing, iPhone at Work: Productivity for Professionals is the book to show you how.

There are plenty of general-purpose iPhone guides, but iPhone at Work: Productivity for Professionals shows you how to complete all the traditional smartphone tasks, like to-do lists, calendars, and e-mail, and become much more efficient and productive at work. You’ll learn mechanisms for developing effective workflows specific to the features of the iPhone and also efficient strategies for dealing with the specialized aspects of business and professional lifestyles.

From the introduction and throughout the book, author Ryan Faas targets professional users of the iPhone. You’ll tour the built-in applications and configuration options, always with work and productivity in mind, and discover all of the enterprise features of the iPhone, learning how to configure and use each one.

Then discover the App Store: source of all third-party software. There’s something a bit daunting about the dominance of games and frivolous apps on the best-seller lists, but there are serious business and vertical applications also available, and you’ll learn about some of the best and how to take advantage of this wealth of add-on and very professional functionality.

And for those administrators with the special job of deploying lots of new iPhones across the enterprise, this book concludes with two appendixes that provide information and resources for companies. The first is intended for organizations looking to perform larger-scale iPhone or iPod touch deployments complete with device management. The second is geared for those companies that wish to develop an iPhone platform–oriented infrastructure through the use of customized in-house applications and iPhone/iPod touch–specific web services.

What you’ll learn

Purchase and configure an iPhone specifically for business

Integrate built-in iPhone platform features into an everyday professional workflow

Access enterprise-wide data and computing features

Pick up specific tips for different professions

Deploy the iPhone platform across groups both large and small

Discover the secrets of iPhone platform customization and personalization

Who is this book for?

You already have or are considering the purchase of an iPhone. You know it’s the coolest smartphone around, but you actually want to use it to make your professional life more efficient, more productive, and more fun! Clearly, the iPhone has inherent uses for a broad range of professions including management, sales, medical/dental, legal, real estate, training and education, human resources, and information technology, so there are many of you. Some of you are novice mobile device users, others are highly experienced mobile pros. No matter, because every professional iPhone user across this continuum of experience wants to learn to work smarter, better, and more efficiently. This book shows you how to use your iPhone to do this.

“This book covers not just the glamorous aspects such as the intrusion act itself, but all of the pitfalls, contracts, clauses, and other gotchas that can occur. The authors have taken their years of trial and error, as well as experience, and documented a previously unknown black art.”
–From the Foreword by Simple Nomad, Senior Security Analyst, BindView RAZOR Team

Penetration testing–in which professional, “white hat” hackers attempt to break through an organization’s security defenses–has become a key defense weapon in today’s information systems security arsenal. Through penetration testing, I.T. and security professionals can take action to prevent true “black hat” hackers from compromising systems and exploiting proprietary information.

Hack I.T. introduces penetration testing and its vital role in an overall network security plan. You will learn about the roles and responsibilities of a penetration testing professional, the motivation and strategies of the underground hacking community, and potential system vulnerabilities, along with corresponding avenues of attack. Most importantly, the book provides a framework for performing penetration testing and offers step-by-step descriptions of each stage in the process. The latest information on the necessary hardware for performing penetration testing, as well as an extensive reference on the available security tools, is included.

Comprehensive in scope Hack I.T. provides in one convenient resource the background, strategies, techniques, and tools you need to test and protect your system–before the real hackers attack.

Specific topics covered in this book include:

* Hacking myths
* Potential drawbacks of penetration testing
* Announced versus unannounced testing
* Application-level holes and defenses
* Penetration through the Internet, including zone transfer, sniffing, and port scanning
* War dialing
* Enumerating NT systems to expose security holes

ASP.NET’s new model for supporting language extensibility is intriguing to developers everywhere. With support for traditional, statically compiled languages like C# as well as dynamic languages like Python, ASP.NET now has a natural ability to support languages that developers want to work with, not ones they are forced to use. ASP.NET is quickly becoming an attractive place for today’s dynamic languages.

Pro ASP.NET Extensibility gives readers an in–depth insight in the new language model within ASP.NET, going beyond the introductory treatment of the topic available elsewhere, full of practical tips and tricks from an experienced developer. Learn about the extensibility and runtime models available with both .NET 3.5 and 4.0, Windows Server 2003 and 2008, and Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 and 7.0. The book explains not only how things work but also why. Using Joerg Krause’s experienced advice and sound tricks, you’ll be able to go further with your very own language projects and transform your .NET development on your own terms—made possible with ASP.NET’s popular extensibility model.

Discover how ASP.NET is extensible in .NET 3.5 and 4.0.

Look in–depth into the internals of ASP.NET page processing.

Customize the behavior of the ASP.NET engine.

What you’ll learn

Understand .NET Framework’s general and ASP.NET’s particular extensibility features.

Extend, replace, or modify the default behavior of almost all basic page processing features.

See how the runtime model’s internal processing works.

Learn tips and tricks for optimizing your applications to run with new dynamic language support.

Explore IronPython and the DLR.

Get a look toward to the future, with advice on point for .NET 4.0 in each chapter

Who is this book for?

This book is for experienced ASP.NET developers who want to get the most out of ASP.NET and learn how to program real–life applications. It’s also for beginners who want to know what’s possible with ASP.NET.
