“As with much of the Nutshell series, this book is aimed at the competent programmer who needs a quick reference, not at the beginner. As a teacher of C programming, I had been looking for a reference work which covered the C99 version of the language standard, and did so in a readable format free of omissions and errors. “C in a Nutshell” did not disappoint, and the utility of the standard library reference was a welcome surprise.” – Graham Lee, news@UK, June 2006 “This excellent book should have been written years ago.” – Paul Hudson, Linux Format, November 2006 – 8/10

Learning a language–any language–involves a process wherein you learn to rely less and less on instruction and more increasingly on the aspects of the language you’ve mastered. Whether you’re learning French, Java, or C, at some point you’ll set aside the tutorial and attempt to converse on your own. It’s not necessary to know every subtle facet of French in order to speak it well, especially if there’s a good dictionary available. Likewise, C programmers don’t need to memorize every detail of C in order to write good programs. What they need instead is a reliable, comprehensive reference that they can keep nearby. C in a Nutshell is that reference. This long-awaited book is a complete reference to the C programming language and C runtime library. Its purpose is to serve as a convenient, reliable companion in your day-to-day work as a C programmer. C in a Nutshell covers virtually everything you need to program in C, describing all the elements of the language and illustrating their use with numerous examples. The book is divided into three distinct parts. The first part is a fast-paced description, reminiscent of the classic Kernighan & Ritchie text on which many C programmers cut their teeth. It focuses specifically on the C language and preprocessor directives, including extensions introduced to the ANSI standard in 1999. These topics and others are covered: Numeric constants Implicit and explicit type conversions Expressions and operators Functions Fixed-length and variable-length arrays Pointers Dynamic memory management Input and output The second part of the book is a comprehensive reference to the C runtime library; it includes an overview of the contents of the standard headers and a description of each standard library function. Part III provides the necessary knowledge of the C programmer’s basic tools: the compiler, the make utility, and the debugger. The tools described here are those in the GNU software collection. C in a Nutshell is the perfect companion to K&R, and destined to be the most reached-for reference on your desk.

Once again, O’Reilly scores big with a comprehensive treatment of a programming language that doesn’t spend much time teaching the fundamentals. Lingo in a Nutshell sets a benchmark for Lingo documentation that no other book or online resource meets. Lingo in a Nutshell has to do with behind-the-scenes aspects of Lingo, including file management, data structures, loops, conditionals, and event handlers. Simply put, this book treats Lingo as a programming language, rather than merely as a piece of Macromedia Director. The coverage you’ll find in Lingo in a Nutshell backs up the more obviously practical material found in this book’s companion volume, Director in a Nutshell. This book also features an excellent chapter called “How Lingo Thinks,” which explains how the various pieces of a Lingo-controlled presentation fit together. Like most Nutshell books, Lingo in a Nutshell includes a very good language reference in addition to its tutorial and explanatory materials. Listing Lingo’s enumerated values, keywords, and commands in full–including some otherwise undocumented ones–this reference makes it easy to locate the information you need as you write programs. The only minor drawback of this book is that it doesn’t cover the changes made to Lingo in the newly released Director 7. –David Wall

This companion book to Director in a Nutshell covers all aspects of Lingo, Director’s powerful scripting language, and is the book for which both Director users and power Lingo programmers have been yearning. An essential tool for both new and experienced Lingo programmers, this concise guide explains how Lingo “thinks” and includes many programming examples as well as undocumented commands. In typical nutshell style, Lingo in a Nutshell explores the syntax, structure, and commands of the language. It includes numerous useful Lingo examples, corrects many errors found in Macromedia’s Lingo documentation, and details dozens of misdocumented and undocumented Lingo keywords that are omitted from Macromedia’s manuals and third-party books. Detailed chapters describe messages, events, scripts, handlers, variables, lists, file I/O, Behaviors, child objects, Xtras, and more. Lingo in a Nutshell caters to the huge pool of Director users attempting to bridge the Lingo gap, yet provides the details for the experienced Linguist that are lacking in other Lingo books.

You may not have heard of the Linux Professional Institute (LPI) or its professional certifications, but they’re becoming an important part of proving professional competence in the Linux operating system. That aside, LPI Linux Certification in a Nutshell is a fantastic introductory Linux book, well suited to introducing a curious newcomer to the environment and bringing an intermediate user up to expert status. The book is organized around the LPI’s published standards for two Level 1 exams (exams 101, which deals with key commands and file-system concepts, and 102, which places more emphasis on hardware, networking, and shell scripting). The organization works well even if you’re not specifically preparing for either exam. LPI Linux Certification in a Nutshell assumes nothing in early chapters, going so far–to cite one example–as to walk readers through the concept of commands with parameters separately from the concept of commands alone. Later, the pace picks up, and strategic advice is substituted (such as how to partition a disk for maximum speed and reliability) for “type-this” instructions. Throughout, the book makes effective use of O’Reilly’s time-tested and remarkably clear format for presenting Unix commands and configuration files. Each chapter concludes with a series of exercises designed to help you discover behaviors on your own, and includes the practice questions you expect in a test-prep aid. –David Wall Topics covered: The knowledge that’s tested on the Linux Professional Institute’s exams 101 and 102, which includes everything from basic Linux commands and concepts to installation of the operating system, essential network configuration, and kernel recompilation.

Paperback
edition.

“…is characteristically O’Reilly through and through – vastly detailed, confidently written and not dressed up with too many screenshots or wild page designs. Although Linux Certifcation…is structured as a front-to-back read, mirroring the order of the LPIC topics, it also features page markings to help you use it as a quick reference guide when you’ve worked through it. The book shows you how to prepare for the LPIC exams, with exercises and examples galore, plus a host of massively useful practice exams to give you a taste of the real thing… O’Reilly’s book is a monster, covering everything in great depth, and even though it’s a bit costly it’s worth the price given the exhaustive coverage therein. Just don’t expect any kind of entertainment along the way – it’s all very serious stuff.” Verdict: A bulging, desk-warping behemoth of a book, tackling LPIC topics with clarity and excellent details. Rating: 9/10 – Mike Saunders, Linux Format, May 2007

“Brave beginners will be well served by this title, which provides an intelligent, fast paced intro to core topics.” – Martin Howse, LinuxUser & Developer, Issue 30 “I whole-heartedly recommend this book to all Python programmers. It is a very concise and informative book, and its small size belies its information content. I would also recommend and suggest this book to any experienced programmers wishing to begin programming in Python, who would enjoy a straight-to-the-point manual on the Python language.” – Daire Stockdale, Cvu/ACCU
–This text refers to the

Paperback
edition.
This book offers Python programmers one place to look when they need help remembering or deciphering the syntax of this open source language and its many powerful but scantily documented modules. This comprehensive reference guide makes it easy to look up the most frequently needed information–not just about the Python language itself, but also the most frequently used parts of the standard library and the most important third-party extensions. Ask any Python aficionado and you’ll hear that Python programmers have it all: an elegant object-oriented language with readable and maintainable syntax, that allows for easy integration with components in C, C++, Java, or C#, and an enormous collection of precoded standard library and third-party extension modules. Moreover, Python is easy to learn, yet powerful enough to take on the most ambitious programming challenges. But what Python programmers used to lack is a concise and clear reference resource, with the appropriate measure of guidance in how best to use Python’s great power. “Python in a Nutshell” fills this need. “Python in a Nutshell,” Second Edition covers more than the language itself; it also deals with the most frequently used parts of the standard library, and the most popular and important third party extensions. Revised and expanded for Python 2.5, this book now contains the gory details of Python’s new subprocess module and breaking news about Microsoft’s new IronPython project. Our “Nutshell” format fits Python perfectly by presenting the highlights of the most important modules and functions in its standard library, which cover over 90% of your practical programming needs. This book includes: A fast-pacedtutorial on the syntax of the Python language An explanation of object-oriented programming in Python Coverage of iterators, generators, exceptions, modules, packages, strings, and regular expressions A quick reference for Python’s built-in types and functions and key modules Reference material on important third-party extensions, such as Numeric and Tkinter Information about extending and embedding Python “Python in a Nutshell” provides a solid, no-nonsense quick reference to information that programmers rely on the most. This book will immediately earn its place in any Python programmer’s library. Praise for the First Edition: “In a nutshell, “Python in a Nutshell” serves one primary goal: to act as an immediately accessible goal for the Python language. True, you can get most of the same core information that is presented within the covers of this volume online, but this will invariably be broken into multiple files, and in all likelihood lacking the examples or the exact syntax description necessary to truly understand a command.” –Richard Cobbett, “Linux Format” “O’Reilly has several good books, of which “Python in a Nutshell” by Alex Martelli is probably the best for giving you some idea of what Python is about and how to do useful things with it.” –Jerry Pournelle, “Byte Magazine”

Following the common-sense O’Reilly style, Mac OS X Tiger in a Nutshell cuts through the chaff and gives you practical details you can use every day. Everything you need to know about the Unix side of Mac OS X has been systematically documented in this book. Mac OS X Tiger in a Nutshell offers a complete overview of Mac OS X Tiger (Version 10.4), focusing on the BSD Unix layer. This book familiarizes you with over 300 of Tiger’s Unix commands, the Terminal application, file management, system and network administration issues, and more. Completely revised for Mac OS X Tiger, this book offers: The most complete and thorough coverage of Mac OS X’s Unix commands you’ll find anywhere (even in the system) An overview of basic system and network administration features, including coverage of NetInfo and Directory Services An introduction to using Mac OS X’s Unix command-line interface, the Terminal application An overview of Mac OS X’s Unix text editors, including vi and Emacs Information on shell syntax variables for Tiger’s default Unix shell, bash Each command and option in this book’s Unix Command Reference has been painstakingly tested and checked against Tiger; even the manpages that ship with Mac OS X can’t compete in accuracy. Mac OS X Tiger in a Nutshell is the most comprehensive quick reference on the market and is a must for any serious Mac user.

“This is one desktop companion which confident Linux users simply cannot be without.” Linux User, November 2003 “The best way to sum this book up is with the original reviewer’s words: “If you don’t lock your office, this will be the first thing that a techie colleague will steal!”.” Linux Format, September “…anyone serious about Linux programming and administration needs this book…The authors are to be congratulated for the scope of coverage, as here’s enough here about both the vi and Emacs editing systems, desktop set-ups and packages, as well as a nod to multimedia use. ” – Gary Flood, IT Training, October 2004

Linux in a Nutshell, now in its fourth edition, has won awards in the Linux community as the most indispensable book about Linux. It is an essential desktop reference for the commands that users of Linux utilize every day, with the depth of information and the practical, succinct “In a Nutshell” format that made the previous editions so popular. Comprehensive but concise, Linux in a Nutshell covers all substantial user, programming, administration, and networking commands for the most common Linux distributions. It’s several quick references rolled into one: sed, gawk, RCS, CVS, vi, Emacs, bash, tcsh, regular expressions, package management, bootloaders, and desktop environments are all covered in this clear, to-the-point volume, along with core command-line utilities. The fourth edition continues to track the major changes in bootloaders, the GNOME and KDE desktops, and general Unix commands. Coverage has been added for GRUB, and for vim, the popular and feature-loaded extension to vi. The addition of several new options to the iptables firewall command and new commands related to DNSSEC and ssh show the book’s value as a security tool.
