Introduction
This is a book about drawing – the actual, physical act.
And it is written for everyone. Through the many years I
have taught people how to draw, I’ve never wanted to know at
the start the different training or abilities of my students – it’s
been more fun to begin open and empty. Nor have I walked
around criticizing, because it bores me – the same mistakes
over and over, returning if repressed, with the same
frustrations. Better to get it right the first time. In this book
I’ve used the same approach, moving back to the beginnings
and prebeginnings where things are usually taken for granted
– because what is taken for granted is the key to what follows.
This book is full of questions which usually go unasked – and
some answers as well.
As you read, you will also be taking time to try out a series
of exercises, or experiments. They are designed so you can do
them at home: I have imagined you sitting in a room – a room
which has become very real as I wrote – doing them as you go
along. Some are purely visual; some require some simple
drawing tools; they can, of course, also be used in a studio or
class. And in one sense they are more than exercises. They are
new ways of seeing, which will from now on inform and enrich
your art.
