This resource of step-by-step directions for the imaginative use of Photoshop deftly combines hand-written notations with actual program menus and photographic images in different stages of completion. It describes the advantages of RAW files, the process of HDR imaging, the options of monochrome conversion, the useful effects of LAB color, and the utilization of layer masks for photo compositing. Dramatic examples of the author’s published work are beautifully displayed and interspersed evenly with procedural instructions.
//The Photoshop Darkroom// delivers practical ideas in a methodical yet appealing fashion. In comprehensible terms, it manages to reduce the complexity of digital post-production to an art form that is as meaningful as it is enjoyable. Shooting, layering and painting techniques are explained like a basic cookie recipe. If you ever felt that you should have obtained better results from your scans or photographs but were overwhelmed by the technical aspects of digital photography, then this inspiring book is for you.
This is a terrific book. First, it shows how to use Photoshop’s layers and masks to get the very most out of your digital captures. And don’t be scared off by the idea of using layers and masks. Using Davis’s own photographs as examples, the book shows just what to do in easy-to-follow illustrated steps. I know that some Photoshop How-To books can be extremely intimidating for the beginner (a 500+ pages book on just about masking and compositing, for instance). But I believe a beginner could pick up this book and within a very short time be able to make real improvements using the methods outlined in this book. The book also explains how Harold has used LAB color to improve his landscapes and achieve some fascinating results with flowers and insects. Anyone interested in improving the looks of their photographs using Photoshop post-processing should have this book in their library.

This is THE Photoshop guide for those wanting to process RAW images. The authors shows you how to do this in Photoshop, step by step, using the Adobe Camera RAW engine. Then they take you through the most useful and important Photoshop capabilities, Layers and Masks, and then several other key tools such as Blending Modes and Channels. Everything proceeds logically, clearly, with lots of illustrations of Photoshop menus and windows to help you step by step. The layout is superb, with reminders, hints, and references to earlier pages to help you along the way. I’ll be using this as a reference for years to come.

I am an amateur photographer, and I have had the good fortune to attend two of Harold Davis’ photo workshops. He is an absolute wealth of information with regard to digital photography, technique, and processing in the Photoshop darkroom. This book does a tremendously effective job of capturing his instruction and his actual workflow in a comprehensive, approachable, detailed way.
For anyone who has been dabbling in Photoshop (as I have for a number of years) and really wants to learn some more advanced techniques, this book is a great resource. Its step-by-step explanations are clear enough for even a very new Photoshop user to follow and apply and see impressive results. The way that the information, as well as tips and useful side comments are presented is also fun and visually appealing – with many amazing photographs, of course – so it’s an enjoyable read.

Worth the money! Impressed enough to order some of his other books.
The handwritten notes are a plus, with the whole book being very easy to follow. His examples and pictures are great and his suggestions top notch!
Buy the book, you will not regret it.
